Cheltenham Local History Society
Home Page
The Society, formed in 1982, exists to provide a focus for those interested in the history of Cheltenham. Its aims include the gathering, study and publication of historical local information. The Society is affiliated with The Cheltenham Arts Council.

Lecture meetings are held in the Municipal Offices (generally the Council Chamber) at 7.30 p.m. normally on the third Tuesday of each month from September to April. Occasional daytime meetings are held at St Lukes Hall. All are welcome at these meetings, although a charge of £1.00 is made to non-members. There is also a summer programme of visits.

Each year members receive three issues of the Newsletter to tell them about the activities of the Society and about other local meetings and publications which might interest them. There is a register of members' interests to help with the exchange of views; information and requests for help with research can be published in the Newsletter. The annual Members' Evening in January gives a further opportunity to see what other members have been researching.

The Society's Journal, published in the spring of each year, contains articles on local research, a list of recent books and articles on Cheltenham and a list of Cheltenham area accessions received by the Gloucestershire Record Office. A copy of the Journal is also included in the cost of membership. Copies may be purchased by non members. Back numbers of some Journals are still available and requests for information should be sent to:

Ms Sally Self at

russalself@aol.com

Membership subscriptions are £8.50 single, £12 for a couple.

Local historians searching for a particular aspect of Cheltenham life, may be interested to know that the Society have produced a CD containing nearly 50,000 references, taken from the "Cheltenham Examiner", a local newspaper which was published from 1839 to 1913.
Subjects range across all aspects of local life from the Leckhampton Hill Riots, the Union Workhouse and the River Chelt floods, to suicides at the Cloddymore railway crossing, the trams and demolished cottages in the way of the advancing Honeybourne Line.
A copy is held in the Cheltenham Reference Library.
