MUSICA VERA was founded in 1964 by Graham Smallbone, Director of Music at Dean Close School, Cheltenham. The Choir meets from 7.30 - 9.30 pm on Wednesdays during term-time to rehearse for three concerts a year. It aims to tackle a wide and varied repertoire, often unaccompanied, with some concerts being joined by organ or small orchestra. The net proceeds from each concert are given to Charity.
Until recently Iona Radice, a founder member of Musica Vera, sang regularly with the Choir. In recognition of her long association with the Choir she was made a Life Member in March 2005.
The Choir is affiliated to Cheltenham Arts Council and Making Music.
MEMBERSHIP
The Choir is looking for new members in all voice parts. Enquiries about membership are welcomed from singers who have some sight reading ability. Please contact the Choir Secretary on Tel 01242 517258, or by email: angela@hedgeways.freeserve.co.uk
MUSICAL DIRECTOR
Oliver Mason took over as Musical Director of Musica Vera in September 2006. Oliver studied cello with Leonard Blizzard and Michael Evans of the Dartington String Quartet, and obtained a music degree at Exeter University. He has spent the last 25 years teaching, much of it at Wynstones School outside Gloucester, creating a curriculum running from 7-18 for all pupils. As well as performing and composing, he has a particular interest in involving those who would not otherwise take part, arising out of a conviction that classical music potentially has something significant to contribute to the experience of every human being. Highlights have been performances of works like St Matthew Passion, Missa Solemnis, Marriage of Figaro, which he has undertaken with school pupils and an unauditioned parent/friend choir. He is currently working at what is set to become the fist Steiner Academy in Herefordshire and teaching at the Devon Steiner School and on the BA course in Steiner education at the University of Plymouth.
